  • Wensleydale Flyer service 856

Funding has been raised to enable the popular Sunday and Bank Holiday 856 Wensleydale Flyer bus service to be saved and continue to run until at least the end of October 2016.

This has been due to the very generous sponsorship by a local business – Outhwaites, the Hawes Ropemaker – together with support from Aysgarth Falls Hotel, Leyburn Town Council, Hawes & High Abbotside Parish Council and Lord Bolton of Bolton Estate.

Ruth Annison of Outhwaites said that they were pleased to support DalesBus in maintaining this vital link which will operate every Sunday and Bank Holiday. She added that “the recent survey and report undertaken by Andrew Turnbull for DalesBus in November 2015 as a requirement of the funding for the winter service from Richmondshire District Council’s Communities Opportunities Fund demonstrated that this service generates £4,000 per month for the local economy. We hope that bus passengers and everyone who values public transport will “spread the word” about this scenic lifeline.”

The 856 Wensleydale Flyer is well used by local residents and visitors, providing a useful direct service between Northallerton and Hawes via Bedale, Leyburn and Aysgarth. Departures times:

    • from Northallerton are at 09:30, 12:30, and 16:00; and

    • from Hawes Market Place at 11:12, 14:42, and 17:32.

The new Dalesbus Summer timetable starts from 1st May 2016 and departure times will change slightly:

    • from Northallerton to 09:30, 12:40, and 16:00; and

    • from Hawes Market Place at 11:18, 14:38, and 17:28.

Full details of Dales services and timetables are available on the DalesBus website www.dalesbus.org and leaflets from usual outlets.

The service is managed by the Dales and Bowland Community Interest Company, a small social enterprise established by the Yorkshire Dales Society and Friends of DalesBus in 2007. It depends on donations and sponsorship from organisations, businesses and individuals to cover running costs and balance the books and is keen to establish new long term funding solutions particularly for the 856 service.

They are very grateful for the messages of support and offers of funding received regarding the Wensleydale Flyer service over the last few months. As well as funding, more fare paying passengers are needed to make the services more sustainable - so it would be great if people could spread the word about DalesBus to their family and friends, guests and customers, leave the car at home, and occasionally let the bus take the strain for a change.
